EDSEL JACOB

Head – Commercial Producer of Channel 4 Coast FM

What I do for a living

Dubai is sweeping the revolution of media very significantly. My passionate attitude, excitement, commitment and personal touch have given me the opportunity to become Head Radio Commercial Producer. Producing commercials in Arabic, Hindi and English is fun using the latest technology and techniques available, while applying my creative streak and seasoned judgment. I work in an industry where I am given the chance to come up with my own ideas and be personally involved in developing, nurturing and executing these for broadcast in different networks.

Staying in the radio industry job is tough and competitive. However I truly believe I have an edge due to my flexibility, creativity, independence and superb interpersonal skills which allow me to function effectively on-the-job. Personally, I gain a lot of satisfaction from challenging myself and succeeding.

My typical working day

Playing music improves one’s concentration and brain function, so my typical work day starts with playing and listening to music. It’s just like my morning coffee, without it, I am not able to start any recording. Out here, they are fond of UK and US voice over talents, hence, work starts 4 hours after 9AM daily and Thursday is my “Nightmare Thursday.” Sending voice overs late afternoon requires me to stay very late at work to ensure the job order is achieved on the day. High volume requests come before the weekend and airing is mostly over the weekend too.

Dealing with different network presenters and hearing my produced radio commercial on-the-air and shared with other sister radio stations is very fulfilling. It makes me forget the daily grind.

Another thing that’s exciting in my job is that I get to meet local and international artists visiting to promote their latest gig at the station, especially with my involvement with the breakfast shows from previous radio stations like Radio One and Radio 2. It becomes even more personal when you get to bond with the artist after the show and they become your friend for the day.

JEORGE Y. ORINES

Manager, Banqueting – Atlantis, The Palm Jumeirah, Dubai

What I do for a living

I work in a capacity of Banquet Operations Manager in Atlantis – The Palm. I handle social events and conferences including high profile events where guests include prominent local and international politicians and celebrities. Part of my main task is to develop and enhance the competencies of our staff through comprehensive training and workshops. This is to ensure that we maintain top class five-star hotel service. We are even extending our services outside the hotel, if guests request to have a private event in their own residence.

I started my career in banking in the Philippines right after I earned my accountancy degree. Five years later, I jumped into the hospitality field here in Dubai, starting modestly as a waiter in December 2004 at the Jumeirah Emirates Towers. In 2006, I was promoted as Team Leader in the same company.

By October 2008, Atlantis – The Palm gave me chance to join the organization as Assistant Manager. After we showcased what Filipinos could do at the workplace, I was then promoted to the post of Operations Manager in 2011.I was part of the Grand Opening of Atlantis – The Palm in 2008.  We had almost 4,500 guests including celebrities like was Michael Jordan, whom I had the chance to meet and chat with.

The most memorable events I have handled so far are the Philippine Independence Day and the recent TernoBall hosted by the Philippine Consulate General and Illustrado, respectively. These events brought me back to my younger days of “Maria Clara and Juan dela Cruz,” especially during the performance of our cultural dances.

My typical working day

Being in a service oriented field, I work five days a week and I do not have regular days off as it usually varies according to the requirement of the business. However, I do make sure that I give quality time to my wife and son, who are with me here in Dubai. In the morning, I always make time to drop my lovely wife at work, and pick her up in the evening.

Message to kababayans out there

Never stop dreaming. Make God the center of your lives and everything will follow. Doing a good job at work is what is expected from us, doing an excellent job is what makes us different!

VENUS DULCE G. BORLONGAN

Executive Secretary & Admin Assistant – Actavis

What I do for a living

I am an Executive Assistant/ PA to Middle East, Greece and Turkey Management Team, and an Administration Assistant and Local Contracts Administrator for Actavis, a multinational pharmaceutical company with global headquarters in Europe and the U.S.A.

What’s interesting about this role is that you can rise to the challenge of wearing different hats at any given time.  There is a variety of things to accomplish, projects to work on and exposure to arrangements of different sorts.  There will always be an opportunity to bring out your best ability in problem solving and trouble shooting, on different scenarios. You can develop a lot of skills as well as meet and engage in discussions with well-experienced people from diverse nations.

My typical day

A typical working day for me means coming to the office before everyone else does. I make an initial check of the office, make notes of office concerns and check the admin calendar.  Then, I tend to new emails. When the directors arrive, I discuss with them of what they need my assistance for – new meetings to arrange, new requests to facilitate, documents to be printed, filed, presented, research to be carried out, projects to accomplish, among other requirements.  After addressing all the directors’ priorities, I would look into my travel, hotel or group meeting arrangements that are not solely for the executives but also for clients and employees.

I visit anything pending that needs follow up with my commercial agreements; update the contract database whenever necessary; produce documents whenever required.  I take the phone, screen the calls, cover the reception in case our office assistant runs errands, welcome guests and perform other duties.

As there as so many things a PA like me does for the directors on daily basis, in general, all of these things make an impact and affect the busy lives of the executives.  The executives rely heavily on the PA, entrusting work will be done efficiently even in their absence.  A PA should never take no for an answer, because there is always a way to get things done.  Being in a job like this is already a remarkable thing!

MIA CACHERO

Business Development Director

Gulf Publishing, Dubai

I work as a business development director for Food and Travel Arabia. My job as a director can be very stressful, with monthly sales targets that I need to achieve, weekly sales reports, having to explore creative ideas to offer clients and of course, to say the least, one-on-one meetings with the owners of the company. However, it is also very rewarding and uplifting especially after finishing another month’s issue of the magazine and knowing that I have contributed something to the company and that I have achieved my sales targets.

My typical work week routine comprise of meetings with advertisers – hotels, tourist board authorities and advertising agencies; attending hotel events; and traveling to other GCC countries to meet with potential clients and present the magazine. Being in this industry gives me so many opportunities such as meeting interesting people and building relationships with them, career growth and learning experiences.

I started as a client servicing agent for Gulf News back in 2005 and climbed up to account group manager in 2009.

The road leading to where I am now was far from easy, but every tiny bit of experience, good or bad, is worth it.

To my fellow Filipinos out there who are aspiring to achieve their goals, just remember – hard work and dedication. Whatever it is that you are tasked to do, always give it your best!  Confidence, in this day and age, is very important especially in an environment of mixed cultures, with different points of view. You need to be able to speak up and do not be afraid to voice your opinions or ask for what you think you deserve. Finally, be grateful to those people who have helped you. Be grateful to HIM and believe that HE will guide you to through.

Arnold Bailing2ARNOLD MARQUEZ BAILING

Art Director for Grey Group

Riyadh

As an art director, I give life to creative concepts and develop the look and feel of the “big idea” for broadcast, print and online media applications. My work is far beyond design, as part of my role is also to inspire the team, mentor designers, interns and actively participate in building strong bonding between the creatives in our agency.

Work is fun. I get to meet lots of people, from clients, photographers, models, suppliers, artists and the likes. No dress codes. My work environment is like a big playground where everyone is young at heart.

There is no typical day at work. It always varies, depending on the project or phase of the project were in. But as the day goes by, bunch of work comes in. Life in an advertising agency is way different than life in other industries. It is not the usual 9 to 6 job. There is no idle time. It’s work and fun at the same time. You have to learn how to juggle between projects, and between clients while doing the daily nurturing of your creative side.

Having worked on the same office environment for almost 12 years now has taught me to love my job. I have learned good work ethic, patience and the value of hard work.

Being a Filipino, it gives me great pride to share our culture, and show how a Filipino worker is honest, humble, responsible, hardworking and has the ability to listen, think and adapt to any situation.

To our fellow OFs, keep the passion burning! Never stop dreaming. Don’t be afraid to take the risk. Remember that those who risk can possibly find out how far they can go.

Application Engineer

Corodex Industries, Dubai

I work as an Application Engineer for Corodex Industries. My profession has allowed me to work with various different technologies and environments while making the world better for our future generations. Somehow, I can say that I have a bond with the environment. Choosing a path least travelled especially for a lady in a male-dominated field is very challenging.

As a woman, especially in the Middle East, sometimes you have to work harder to prove yourself. However, once you have proven that you are knowledgeable and hardworking, as a woman you may even have some advantages over men and this is what I like in my job.

My typical day consists of meeting with people and getting updates on existing projects specifically related to Odour Control System. Some days I need to go to the site and do some site survey in order to have a proper and appropriate design. Considering the weather here in Dubai during summer, it could get tough.

I would say that it’s not a fancy task – looking into wastewater treatment with all the waste and malodorous smells.  But there is such a joy in my heart knowing that I am designing a system that will treat all that waste and convert it into useful resources. Moreover, controlling and preventing pollution are the main goals of my job.

There are also days where I will be staying in my cubicle doing calculations to design biological reactors used in the wastewater treatment plant.

After a hard day’s work, I always make sure that fitness is always on my list. I am into sports such as, running, swimming and dragon boat. Belonging in a group of like-minded individuals who are passionate in sports will encourage you not only to do sports but to make it an integral part of your life.

I have always believed that everything can seem difficult at first; however, having the faith to step out of your comfort zone and not giving up can make it easier and makes you get better at it. It challenges me to learn something new every day, be it technical or leadership skills, such as decision-making, problem solving, communication and time management skills.

Working in the engineering field makes me realize that life is about learning and realizing that anything is possible if you have faith and put your mind to it. Once you realize that, everything else will follow. You will have courage to take the step towards your dream. On the one hand, mistakes and failures are inevitable, just part of being human, but learning from mistakes align yourself with your goals. There is a proverb that says sometimes the wind is against you, but remember, although you cannot change the wind, you can adjust your sail and as long as you persist you will succeed.

A peek at the lives of Filipino professionals in the UAE

2014-09-07 18 38 45GEOFFREY SALATAN

Business Travel Consultant

Airlink International U.A.E.

I have been working with Airlink International as a business travel consultant since 2006. As a business travel consultant, my typical day at work starts and ends with assisting passengers with their travel needs and booking queries. I’m often overwhelmed with calls till late midnight, but somehow at the end of the day, I know that I was able to genuinely assist others. I just don’t sell, I build. My job requires me to be an ear to people and that means I listen to not only their travel plans but their sentiments and OFW stories, working so hard to uplift the welfare of their loved ones back home.

Over time, the Filipino community in UAE grew and this led me to make a business decision and do a 360-degree business shift, from corporate to retail, targeting the Filipino market.  My valued cash clients greatly multiplied and kept growing through continuous referrals as a result of excellent service. I have gone to the extent of openly sharing my personal mobile number with anyone I came across to widen my network.

Every single penny really counts!  This motivated me to use my profession to help our kababayans to access the cheapest and most reasonable rate available. During emergency cases, I prioritize and ensure that my passengers are attended to.

I created awareness about my business by utilizing the most powerful tool in our generation now: social media.  I also keep on interacting and associating myself with different Filipino organizations to tap potential clients and to increase my contacts.  My best endorsers are my satisfied passengers who know they can trust me with their travel plans.

My dedication to the job paid off. In June 2013, Airlink International supported my vision to put up a Philippine Support Desk, which I have been entrusted to lead.

Rommel Pic Special 4ROMMEL SERGIO

Associate Professor

Canadian University of Dubai (CUD)

I am an Associate Professor at the Canadian University of Dubai (CUD). I am the Chair of the Human Resource Management Program under the auspices of the School of Business Administration.  I directly report to the Dean.  My teaching experience covers the areas of human resource management (going seven years here in Dubai, UAE) and organizational psychology (eight years in the Philippines).  Currently, I teach organizational behavior, organizational development and change, and business research; among other human resource management courses at the graduate (MBA) and undergraduate levels.

Not all people get the chance to travel.  I am blessed! I get the chance to travel outside UAE because most of my research presentations are funded by my current university.  Recently, I visited top-brass schools such as Harvard University, Oxford University, among other places in the US and UK as virtual part of my research endeavor.

DSC_0106Prior to university teaching, I served in various multinational companies as HR Manager then later on as Organizational Development Consultant in the Philippines and in the UAE.

My schedule is as a faculty and administrator always tedious! Crazy as it may seem, I always find reason to love what I do so that work does not become a toxic routine.  Essentially, I see to it that my research agenda in the year-long schedule is met.  So I do my research work almost on a weekly basis. We need to have a minimum of one refereed publication and at least an international conference per year to present our research findings.

A few months ago, my dream came true upon presenting a research paper in international business conferences at Harvard University in Boston, USA and at Sydney, Australia. I, together with some Filipino- and Puerto Rican co-authors were chosen as the recipient of the Best Research Paper Award.

Most recently, I was named the Most Outstanding Asian Faculty in Human Resource Management during the 2014 Asian Education Leadership Awards.   I am more than happy to know that I qualified for the screening criteria based on research publication, teaching effectiveness, awards received in the past, and media coverage obtained.

With these accolades, I only have these things in mind: I shall continue to teach minds and inspire hearts of my students.

JHOANA NELISSEN – Freelance Make-up Artist/Stylist

Filipinos in Dubai: It's What I Do

I was a flight attendant for almost nine years with Qatar Airways before moving to Dubai to live with my husband. Currently, I am a freelance makeup artist/stylist and a contractual private flight attendant catering to VIPs, diplomats and celebrity clientele, based in Abu Dhabi.

My fascination for cosmetics and beauty made me decide to enroll in Makeup Designory School (MUD) back in the Philippines. Since then, I have been enjoying every transformation I make. I even had the privilege to be part of the Damac Akoya project launch, where I had the opportunity to meet Donald Trump and his entourage. I was also lucky to work with a Bollywood singer shooting a music video in Dubai.

Seeing my creations on billboards, print ads, TV or on runways gives me a different feeling of fulfillment. Being an artist is a never ending journey. Every day you learn new tricks and techniques and that’s how I continuously sharpen my skills. I continue to attend workshops with top makeup brands to keep up with current fashion and trends.

The best thing about this job is not doing the same thing every day. One day you’re in a studio doing portfolio shoots and the next, you’re outdoor doing advertisements.

Filipinos in Dubai: It's What I Do

However, the desire to fly is still very  much a part of me and that’s why I don’t want to fully give up on that. It’s too close to my heart! It was the job that has taught me to be independent and see the world in a different way.

EDWIN RICO – Makati Bar Manager, Asiana Hotel

Filipinos in Dubai: It's What I Do

For almost two years now, I have been managing Asiana Hotel’s Makati comedy bar. As a comedy bar manager, I have to maintain the energy of happiness in our outlet.

When I took over, there was a big challenge to improve daily sales, as well as the concept of the bar.  It was not easy, but I never stop listening for suggestions and comments from my guests.

Every day I maintain the required daily sales and relationships with our clients. My task is to talk to different Filipino groups and organizations like the PHILCOM community.  I am active in social media to update them about our daily promotions and activities.  I involve our outlets in all events and activities, especially charity projects of Filipino volunteer groups in Dubai.

Filipinos in Dubai: It's What I Do

Working in a high pressure environment makes me organized and efficient. My favorite part of the job is planning daily promotions and monthly events, especially if I see my guests satisfied with my idea.

Training my team and making them feel that they belong are keys to our success. I always have or make the time to listen to them, to support them in their dreams and to make a decision for the good of everyone.

With such an opportunity, I thought on how to give back the support of our friends, regulars and walk-in guests. The idea was to have a charity mini solo show of my Makati Master. Through the support of the management, we decided to get a percentage of the sales revenue from every show to raise enough money to buy a return ticket to the Philippines for distressed Filipinos in POLO – OWWA.

The response of our kababayans and foreign guests surprised me. After our three shows, we got tickets, which were awarded during a January 19, 2014 show at the Philippine consulate. We cannot explain what we felt that day when we saw the laughter, tears and excitement of the awardees to see their family back home. That was a heartwarming moment for all of us and we will not stop in doing shows to help them.

For my kababayans, my advice is to make GOD as the center of everything in our life. God for me means G- Goals in our life, O- Obedience to do it and D- Determination to achieve our dreams. We should believe in ourselves, be honest all the time and give our hearts in all that we do. Success in life will start in one’s self and to achieve it, share your happiness with others.

Gavier Carpio

New Business Adviser (Banking)

Dubai

I work as a new business adviser in an international financial institution.  I assist customers with setting up their account both locally and offshore and provide them with appropriate advice about different banking products based on their needs.

The job may sound simple but it entails a lot of responsibilities in terms of managing customer expectations and ensuring their satisfaction, winning customer’s loyalty. At the same time, everything is in line with regulatory policies set forth by UAE Central Bank and other international bodies.

I’ve had this job for over four years and it has given me the chance to showcase both to customers and colleagues that Filipinos are trustworthy and very reliable.  By doing my job properly in an organized manner and by being polite and professional, I have somehow contributed to my employer by growing their network of customers.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned it’s that you should never underestimate the fruit of hard work. There was a time when my job was in peril due to a new company strategy to minimize our international presence.  This was been made known publicly and most of the customers asked how it would affect the existing staff members.  I was humbled and truly overwhelmed with the support I received not just from my colleagues but also from very kindhearted, concerned and sincere customers.  I received recommendations from them to get interviews at different companies.

Although I was still able to keep my job, the support, assistance and just the mere offer of their help assured me that I was doing something right. Their support really touched my heart and made me gain more friends who I know are truly respectful of what I do and of who I am.

All of us can be successful in any little given way.  Success has many definitions based on what an individual aims for.  Always aim for something within reach and once achieved, aim for something higher. With all our inherent politeness, professionalism, resourcefulness and love for everything we do, there’s no denying that Filipinos can always shine bright, if not the brightest, in whatever they choose to do.  It’s just always a matter of pouring our heart out and doing the best that we can.  All the best to all the Filipinos in UAE and may God bless us all always.

Ian Borromeo

PR & Marketing Executive

Aviareps – Dubai, UAE

I work for one of the most illustrious tourism agencies, not only here in the Middle East but across the globe. I’m the youngest member of this humongous conglomerate in the Middle East; in many ways, this job is like a dream come true and a badge of honor for me.

Indisputably, being a PR Practitioner is not an easy job. It requires a lot of patience, determination and passion for you to succeed, which I am proud to have. Nevertheless, it is also a very rewarding job as it gives me a lot of travel opportunities and the chance to meet high-profile people and media personalities.

The clients I handle on my own as their exclusive publicist in the Middle East include the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group and Onyx Hospitality Group. I also coordinate with media to discuss tie-ups and features and coordinate press trips.

Last year, Dubai won the Office of the Year Award from 38 international offices from different countries. I was awarded the “Employee of the Year” and as the only Filipino in our company at that time, I was proud to embody the hard work, commitment and zeal of every Filipino worker all over the world. Our General Manager who is Australian even commended me for my dedication, saying that Filipinos are the best employees he has ever had in his company.

I think my philosophy is based on something my grandmother once said. “If you are not willing to risk for the usual, you have to settle for the ordinary”, she would say and I somehow never forgot that.

Being a Filipino, who are known to many as domestic aids, I am one of the “kabayans” who wants to strive hard to change what others has stereotyped us to be. There is actually nothing wrong about being a household helper, but I believe that everyone can rise up from the sands because even skyscrapers came from gravel and dust. In this life wherein change is the only constant thing, I believe that there is a thin line between dreams and success and the only message that I hope I can send to all our “kabayans” is you can break that line, cross it.

ANNA LIZA LLAGAS

Guest Service Agent

Corporate Real Estate Services (MAF DALKIA)

Standard Chartered Bank

I work as a Guest Service Agent. My duties include event management, floor coordination as well as carrying out any other duties as directed by Management. It is my duty to provide a high level of customer service at all times, while promoting a good image and positive impression for the group with all the people we work with.

During my free time, I also do modelling. I love to pose in front of the camera and enjoy nurturing this other side of my personality.  Modelling has also allowed me to participate in charity works which I enjoy.  I like the fact that even in this simple way, I can help others.

My typical working day starts as early at 5 AM. I get to work at 7:30 AM and end at 5:30 PM.  Being in the corporate world, I love being active, meeting interesting people and CEO’s from different parts of the world. I’m fortunate to have wonderful people and leaders around me who have faith in me and believe that I can perform the job well. I’m more than happy to say that I’m living out my dream.

I prefer to work for love, not for money. That principle gives me strong determination to keep on going and exploring my career. At the young age of 19, my dream was to get a regular job right after I graduated from college in 2003. My main objective was to stand as a breadwinner for my one sister and one brother. I spent five years of working successfully in Brunei Darussalam before I landed in Dubai and my dream has come true.

While I was working in hospitality and corporate companies, I got a chance to develop my skills to interact efficiently with people.  I guess you can say that I have gained maturity from work experiences.

‘Discipline, strong responsibility and commitment are secrets to success. I think people should learn on how to value their character other than material things because these count the most. Love your parents and always appreciate things along the way. First and foremost, never forget to put God in every decision that you make; everything will be fine.

MANUEL ALMARIO

Community Journalist

Gulf News

I have been working in Gulf News as a community journalist for more than a decade now. I am very proud and grateful to be part of a leading daily English language newspaper in the UAE. It has been a rewarding and enriching experience for me as a journalist.

Since I am managing the complaints section, I have to screen all the complaints of our readers if they are worth pursuing. Prior to publication of complaints against any company offering a public service such as banks, telecoms, airlines, and so on, I have to investigate the issue, and if required, get the comments from the management of the concerned company to present both sides of the story. I am happy to note that, in a way, I am able to help the general public resolve their issues. It is very fulfilling and heartwarming whenever I receive a token of appreciation; a simple thank you note from our readers for resolving their issues makes my day. Evidently, I am happy with what I do and this is why my loyalty is with Gulf News!

Facebook eats up my life. Let’s face it, Facebook is addictive! Although it’s a social networking site, it’s still part of my daily routine at work; I have to look for other sources of information, interesting unique stories, news to report, and so on. It is very fascinating to learn of varying issues from personal account to group activities; they help me to stay abreast of the current news stories.

Aside from the above duties, as a journalist, I also have the privilege of meeting different interesting people and writing about their stories. There are a lot of fascinating stories that has happened to me working here for over a decade. What comes to mind is when I covered the performance of my favorite singing pop sensations Charice Pempengco and Billy Crawford at the Dubai Tennis Stadium. It was simply amazing!

My motto is to live life to the fullest, as life is so short. I urge Filipinos do the same to enjoy life, but always follow your heart and do the right things to be able to inspire others. And be proud of being Pinoy!

CRISNA de GUZMAN

Sales and Marketing Executive

Kalimat Group

I have been in sales and marketing ever since I stepped in the corporate world. When I moved to Dubai four years ago, I really wanted to work in print media, preferably for a magazine. Thank God, I got what I wanted. I am the Sales & Marketing Executive for Kalimat Group, mainly responsible for selling advertisement space in our monthly travel, car and yacht magazines. There are some editorial parts of my job, too. I give recommendations on what subjects to feature and I handle the shopping and fashion pages.

My work revolves mostly around networking and meeting with who’s who in the travel, motoring and high street fashion industry in the UAE and overseas. My work requires me to always be on the move, I’m out of my office most of the time for sales meeting, attending press conferences, exhibitions and product launches. Where there are media and social happenings, you will find me there.

A typical working day in my life either starts with me going directly to meet a client or going to my office at the Dubai Media City. My day usually has a lot of phone calls, emails and moving around. I am on the road 70% of the day for negotiation meetings and to close important deals. On some days, I could also be busy with my VIP invites to fashion shows, concerts, product launches and media parties. These events usually stretch my working hours until late night. But that’s the fun part of my job, I must say. I guess you can’t be in this industry without being a social butterfly.

With Roberto Cavalli

I’ve had the chance to travel because of my job.  I have been to London, Berlin, Vienna, Basel, Lucerne, Doha and Beirut to name a few. Most of the time, in a room where I am the only Filipino, I feel like I’m not just representing our media outfit, but our country as well. It makes me feel proud especially when people take notice. I have met a lot of very interesting and successful people because of my job – from government officials from different countries, to CEO’s and heads of big corporations, as well as celebrities like Roberto Cavalli, Kim Kardashian, Giovanna Ferragamo, and Elisa Sednaoui.

My worth ethic is “work hard, play harder”. We are not just here to work and enslave ourselves with the complexities of our everyday lives. Let loose and learn how to enjoy life. See the world if you have the chance. Take advantage of how multi-cultural it is here.

Make a lot of friends, learn about others’ culture, equip yourself with great memories that you will treasure forever and share with your grandchildren when you grow old.

Lastly, be flexible with your environment. Learn how to adapt and deal with different types of people and value people that you meet along the way. Good relationships are more important than any sales or business dealings.

ANTHONY LORENZO APOLINARIO

Senior Project Manager

Architecture graduate Anthony Lorenzo Apolinario has always been in the business of building things. Before coming to UAE, he was working as an in-house architect for one of the leading developers in the Philippines.

Now, in Dubai, he is a Senior Project Manager in Bond Interior, one of the top interior fit-out and turnkey contractors in UAE. “I am also managing two of the stakeholders of the company thus taking a role of a Key Account Manager aside from my own projects.”

Speaking as someone whose profession involves designing and building structures from scratch, Apolinario says that what is most fulfilling about is job is completing a project.  “Our projects are our trophies while customers’ satisfaction is what keeps us going,” he said.

“My greatest achievement is the completion of the Desert Islands Resort and Spa interior refurbishment. The hotel is considered as one of the most luxurious resorts located at Sir Bani Yas, Abu Dhabi,” Apolinario said, describing his latest trophy.

When he is not tinkering with a new project or mulling over a building idea, you will find Apolinario on the basketball court or at the gym. “These activities are my outlet from stress at work. I see to it that I am well rested on Fridays.”

Back in the Philippines are his children who serve as his motivation.  “Here in Dubai, I am happy to have a partner who gives me strength and courage to aim high,” he concluded.

BS Hotel Restaurant Management graduate from San Sebastian College Recoletos de Manila Romianne Carla Miclat Quion, says “I was once a very keen cheerleader in my college days and lived an active teenage life.”  This young lady brought the same energy and sunny disposition with her, when she moved to Dubai shortly after graduation.

“I am the head go-to girl on anything that involves administration. My typical day includes providing support to the director and GM. It involves a significant amount of paper work and visa processing, among other ad hoc tasks in the office. Name what you need, I can get it done — and in no time!” she quipped.

Evidently one who enjoys rising to the occasion of each deadline thrown at her, Quion says of her job, “I’m given a chance to meet high caliber people of different industries. That alone is already rewarding in itself. It gives me a certain high knowing that one day, under normal circumstances I can be one of them.”

“As a woman, I can say a great achievement is becoming a mother to a two year old girl, she is the best thing life has rewarded me. She is my driving force when I hit low points and just a smile from her would make all of life’s challenges worth it. She reminds me that I am in the best part of my life and that nothing can stop me in achieving more out of this life,” she said.

As someone who is involved in design, Liberato says that after convincing a client to take on their design proposals and the execution of their work, “It’s a great feeling to see a smile on their faces after the job is completed.”  She says that this is one of the rewards of her job.  But making her parents proud of what she has achieved easily trumps that. “We have very close family ties and I can say that I have the coolest family ever!

PERLA DULAY-ALVER

Warehouse Manager – DANZAS AEI

Dubai, UAE

At one point in her life, Perla Dulay Alver’s job involved working around machines much bigger than her and being surrounded by men.

“I was a full time Marine Machinery Mechanic apprentice at the Subic Naval Base. I was trying to learn how to do a man’s work around several US warships, and at times inside the submarines.”

Simultaneously, she was working on her Accounting degree, which was a good thing because as she explains it, “When the US bases were closed down, apprentices were the first to be laid off.”

Her Accounting degree served her better when she first came to Dubai in 1992, as a 21 year old newlywed where she first worked as Receptionist then eventually grew to Customer Service Manager in Smith & Nephew FZE, a global leader in medical devices for healthcare.

After 15 years in the company, Alver moved into the Life Science Division of Danzas AEI in 2007 as a Warehouse Manager.

“I manage day to day operations within the distribution centre which handles the warehousing needs of our healthcare customers. What we do in distribution is a very important part of the chain. We ensure that healthcare and medical devices/products reach the users in a timely manner and in good condition. There is no margin for error when it comes to serving an industry on which people’s lives depend on.”

ALDO AGUILAR

Production & Logistics Manager – Red Middle East

Dubai, UAE

Architecture graduate Aldo Aguilar wasn’t expecting to fall in love with Dubai.

In fact, he was expecting quite the opposite.

“I was working as a freelance artist in the Philippines when my mother asked me to join her in Dubai. I hesitated because I did not want to live in an even hotter place, but then I decided to give in to my mom. I came to Dubai in the summer of 1993 and I immediately fell in love with the place. It was such a beautiful place without much pollution and traffic. And the desert is fun, too!” shared Aguilar.

Aguilar has been living and working in Dubai since and has spent most of his years as a Production Manager at Leo Burnett, handling the production of point of sale materials.  Recently, he has transferred to Red Middle East to take on the post of Production & Logistics Manager.

“I think I have already achieved my goal in life but I am still working on spending my quality time with my family.” Thinking of his family, Aguilar reminisces about how another summer proved to be a new beginning for him. Aguilar recalled, “It was also summer here in Dubai when I met a beautiful girl in a church gathering. That girl gave me the honor of being her husband. We are blessed with two amazing children, Ego, 14 and Angel, 4.”

Despite having both children born and raised in Dubai, Aguilar and his wife make sure that they the value of being a Filipino. “They have to embrace it because here in Dubai we are all surrounded by all kind of beliefs and religions. My parents’ legacy to me was my strong identity as a Filipino and I want to pass that on to my children.”
MARIA CRISTINA ROSALES-ZUNIGA

Business Development Manager – Middle East & Africa

Terumo Corporation

Her days remain to be hectic, though for different reason. “I have to sort through hundreds of emails of all sorts: product inquiries, customer complaints, shipment-related matters, new product development,” Rosales-Zuniga enumerated. “Then there are phone calls and internal/external meetings to attend to.”

Nonetheless, Rosales-Zuniga finds immense joy in her work. “My greatest achievement is having reached where I am now through good old-fashioned hard work, perseverance, self-reliance, dedication and commitment. There is no substitute for patience and hard work,” she stressed.

“I never gave up despite of uncertainties, job pressures, challenges and trials but instead, I remained loyal, honest, trustworthy and most all, firm in my commitment to even work harder and do the best I can. I did all these for the love my work, inspired by family and friends, and most of all, faith in God,” Rosales – Zuniga said.

The mother of four children between the ages of 11 and one, says she sets aside her leisure time for her kids and husband who works as an Emergency Medical Technician for the Abu Dhabi Ambulance Police, Ministry of Interior. Specifically, she loves to cook and bake for them.

“Those are some of the simple pleasures of life, right? To go for a stroll at the park, watch TV with your family and dine in our favorite restaurants on special occasions and when I don’t cook for them,” laughed Rosales-Zuniga who ended by sharing that when she does watch TV, it’s mostly to get culinary tips and recipes.

MO PURPLE JUACHON

Philippines Corridor-in-Charge – Dubai

UAE Exchange Center LLC

UAE

Mo Purple Juachon had worked in Business Process Outsourcing and events management before.  When he moved to Dubai, he combined those two areas of expertise. “I was an e-Rep for People Support and before that, I was an events management staff for Couples for Christ before moving to Dubai,” said Juachon.

Now, working as the Philippine Coordinator in charge of Dubai for the UAE Exchange Center LLC, Juachon described his responsibilities to include all marketing activities in relation to the Philippine business of UAE Exchange.

“The thing that I really like most about my job is that it’s a mix of a lot of things. It’s never routine work except for a couple of reports. Being in the Marketing Department, the job calls for a bit of creativity, being on the move to see places, meet people and even attend events and concerts.”

In keeping with what kept him busy before moving to Dubai, Juachon still regularly attends activities of the CFC, and every now and then finds the time to play his guitar and immerse himself in writing poetry  and articles.

Marris Remuth Mana

Relationship Manager – Emirates Post, UAE

Being a Relationship Manager for the Emirates Post Group Holding Company is certainly a departure from being in the seminary. But that is the path that Marris took in his present position.

While in the Seminary for his priestly formation, Marris felt that something was missing and decided to move out from the Seminary. During this time, he taught Philosophy in one of the private schools in Cabanatuan City, The Good Samaritan Colleges.

Now, as a Relationship manager, he prepares SME sales plans and targets, while taking into consideration market growth, competition, and future expansion. “Basically I prepare my daily sales report every morning. This outlines achievements and milestones of the previous day, whom I met with, and the status of client projects.”

When he is not talking to clients, he is visiting them to make sure that they are taken care of and their needs are properly anticipated before they become potential problems.

“The most fulfilling part of my job is closing a deal and receiving positive feedback from a satisfied client.”

The former seminarian says that he has now found what was missing when he was in the seminary — his wife. “I am so lucky, because both my wife and I are working here in Dubai. This allows us to share more and allows us to feel how much we love each other.”

Marris’ wife works as a Marketing Planner in one the prestigious companies in Dubai.

Luchie Suguitan

Fund Admin Manager – Delta Partners, Dubai

St. Paul University of Manila Bachelor of Science in Hotel and Restaurant Management graduate Luchie Suguitan worked for her Alma Mater straight out of college, and then moved to Dubai in 2004, attracted by the prospects in the hospitality industry.  Today, however, with a strategic career move, she finds her talents and skills flourishing while working as the Fund Admin Manager of Delta Partners’ Investment business.  Delta Partners is the leading firm in Advisory and Investment business, specializing in telecoms, media and technology.  Luchie looks after the administration functions of the company’s investment business where she undertakes responsibilities in Investor Relations, Fund Administration, support in Deal Execution & Portfolio Management, as well as Legal and Compliance.

Luchie says, that the most fulfilling aspect about her job is not only making sure that she has ticked all the boxes in her work list, but also receiving rave reviews from bosses – especially after pulling off a VIP Investors’ Event and contributing to the effort of her team’s milestones, or sometimes, even something as simple as locking down a task force call.

Outside her professional life, Luchi is into Bikram Yoga, baking and photography.  She’s also deeply attached to Tomi, her Bristish Blue cat and says that even after eight years in the emirates, she still gets homesick and is thankful that her 800-MAMA helpline is open 24/7.

Antonette Rosales Gaza

Complex Assistant Human Resources Manager

Southern Sun – Al Manzil & Qamardeen Hotels – UAE

When Antonette arrived in Dubai in 1999, she started her career as a Line Employee (Hostess) at the One & Only Royal Mirage. She dreamt of becoming a Manager someday, but hesitant to dream too big, and was always conscious of being an undergraduate.

But because she had the right attitude, perseverance and dedication Antonette was able to get an opportunity to be cross-trained in Human Resources.  “After six months of cross-training, Management appointed me as Junior Training Secretary. Then after one (1) year, I was promoted to Secretary to the Director of Human Resources. During my tenure as a Secretary, I took advantage of the possibilities of learning other aspects of Human Resources. I fulfilled some lateral services in the department in doing some of my colleagues’ tasks and responsibilities during their absence,” says Antonette.

She worked 12-15 hours a day, but says “it was never a problem to me.” After two (2) years of being a Secretary, she was again promoted to Human Resources Coordinator/Staff Accommodation In-Charge, which was already middle management level. The position challenged Antonette to further prove herself. She was closer and closer to her goal to become a Manager some day.

“In 2006, Southern Sun Hotels posted an opening for a Staff Accommodation Manager which I applied for, and was very fortunate to get the job. I knew for a fact that a managerial position can be a very challenging one, but by this time, I never doubted myself, my capabilities and my passion towards work.”

In 2008, Antonette was promoted to her current position of Complex Assistant Human Resources Manager.  She may have reached her goal, but has now set her sights even higher.

Being in this position and managing two Hotel properties is indeed not an easy task, however, I know that if I continue to believe in myself, there is no doubt that I will be able to achieve the Executive Management level position in the near future,” says Antonette, with the same confidence and determination that brought her to where she is today.

Richard Serafico

Senior Premium Support Services Consultant

– Middle East & Africa,

MISYS, UAE

Richard was working as a Senior Support Consultant in Misys-Manila office for 9 years before making the move to Dubai to work for the same company as a Senior Premium Support Services Consultant for Middle East and Africa.

Describing a typical day which includes meetings with Middle East and Africa (MEA) clients, Richard says his responsibilities include building an understanding of the customer’s IT environment/infrastructure and becoming a trusted advisor.  “We share product knowledge expertise, technical and domain information and recommend best practice to our clients towards managing the solutions they bought from us.   We deliver our services on-site or off-site to Middle East and Africa clients,” Richard explains.

Uprooting himself from his comfort zone in Manila, and doing everything he was doing before but in a different country was the biggest challenge for Richard. But because he is evidently excelling in his field, Richard was able to turn this challenge into his biggest achievement.  The fact that he continues to enjoy his job immensely is a bonus to him.

In his freetime, Richard plays basketball and goes wall climbing. In between these calorie-burners, he enjoys eating out, watching movies, reading manga and watching animes.

EDVER CELSO

Financial Adviser, Prosperity Insurance Brokerage LLC

Dubai

My Job

I was a stewardess for 13 years and flew with major international airlines Philippine Airlines, Qatar Airways and Emirates Airlines.  Then motherhood gave me the chance to choose a different career path. I became a financial adviser because I personally experienced the advantages of sound financial planning and got attracted to the benefits of the job – meeting different people and being able to help them.

I help individuals and families keen on achieving their future financial goals. I get an overview of their needs, dreams and goals in life. I listen to financial concerns and analyse their personal situation.  I then propose realistic, unbiased solutions to provide them peace of mind.  Finally, I collaborate with them long term to ensure that plans and goals are accomplished. Moreso, it’s also important for me to show my clients that I practice what I preach.

As a Financial Adviser, I am privileged to show kababayans options on how to live their lives to the fullest whilst their income, families, selves and assets are protected, as well as comfortably preparing for their future dreams. Every Filipino individual and family I have serviced gives me fulfillment because I know that I have set their minds free from uncertainties.

A typical working day for me

Most of my workday is spent with prospects and clients; this helps me build trust and rapport.  Before any meeting though, I first prepare my presentations and research about my client’s profile, know their interests that could encourage them to make the first step towards wealth building. Client meetings are casual and intimate. I usually go to their place. It’s private, quiet and comfortable for them. Other times, I invite them to my place. I cook for them, chit-chat and if they have children, they can play with my daughter in her play room. I conduct an in-depth review of their financial circumstances and future aims which could go for a couple of hours or more.

At the office, I analyze the data gathered and design the best plan suited to individual client’s needs. Liaising with our head office, product providers, updating myself with different financial products, legislation, funds, keeping records up to date to comply with the regulations and informing clients with any changes or updates, these are the things that I typically do before the day ends.

More than just being a financial adviser, I am also a wife and a mother. Breakfast and dinner are always a family affair. I also make sure every week, I spend two full days with my family especially my daughter, Hannah.  What’s great with my job is that I manage my own hours.

Career Advice

Nothing comes easy, but hard work, dedication and persistence will eventually bring you career fulfilment. Explore your potentials in every opportunity. Love what you do and be proud. Be happy to do it. Along the way, you will realize your potential or definitely, somebody else will.

As a Financial Adviser I say we should all enjoy today but don’t forget about tomorrow. Financial freedom is all we OF’s want at the end of the day, opting to come here and leave our loved ones back home is not an easy thing to do.

………………………

RUBEN MIRABEL

Art Director, The Idea Agency

Dubai

My Job

I work on above-the-line or traditional advertising like print, TV and radio for our various clients. I also develop below-the-line advertising requirements like brochures, posters and the like.  One of my most memorable projects involved creating a logo for Damas Cut.  From this, I learned that a diamond can have many different cuts: there’s a Dubai Cut with 100 facets, a Tiffany cut which is very elegant and a Damas Cut with 99 facets that give the diamond its brilliance and luster. I have handled projects involving the most precious stones and most prized jewels in the world. I have also been privileged to see the world’s biggest, perfect pearl and diamonds.

Photography is also a big part of my job. In 2006, I was commissioned to cover Dubai Fashion for En Vouge Magazine. At the same time, I was given an opportunity to shoot a Tiffany & Co. brochure.  That was really my big break. Since then, opportunities to style and art direct jewelry and fashion shoots just kept coming.

Meeting with clients of different nationalities is not an easy task, the buzz of the advertizing world makes me crazy sometimes, but when I see my work published in different newspapers and magazines, I always feel rewarded. It’s like someone is giving me a pat on the back each time, saying, “Job well done, keep it up!”

A typical working day for me

I start my day with a cup of tea while reading the latest news on BBC online. Then, off I go looking for inspirations for my logos, magazine and website requirements for the day. For lunch, I usually just grab a sandwich and stroll around the office for 15 minutes before going back to my seat and losing myself in the world of reality and dreams that I weave together to create the perfect campaign.

Career Advice

In my years in the business, I’ve learned that the best thing to do is to reach for your dreams and don’t let others intimidate you. As we Filipinos say “LABAN kung LABAN.”
