Photographer, Entrepreneur

Hyku arrived in Dubai with practically zero connections in the photography industry. She started of what has turned out to be a remarkable career by working in a portrait studio. Eventually, she decided to pursue freelance photography, armed with just one camera body, a flash and two lenses. And by virtue of her hard work, sleepless nights, and ability to market her work, she was able to nurture her career and launch her own company: Hyku D Photography.

With a strong track record of success that spans 4 years, Hyku decided to expand her business in 2016 by setting up an office and hiring full time employees, with the objective of attracting larger, more multinational clients.  As a result of this expansion, Hyku’s company was chosen as the official photographer of the recent Tommy Hilfiger ad campaign, featuring a-list model Gigi Hadid. Additionally, Hyku was also elected as the brand ambassador for companies Huawei and Timberland.

Of her struggles and hustles as a photographer, Hyku elaborates: “The biggest lesson that I learned is no one else can make it happen for you but yourself. Be a go getter. Do whatever it takes and never settle. Be ambitious without stepping on other people’s toes. And always give back.”

With her serial entrepreneurial skills coupled with grit and determination to expand her ventures, Mayet Malang Evans is happy to see that her dream of uplifting other people’s lives through alternative education is growing steadily.

As the CEO of Filbrit Training Centre, a provider of educational opportunities at a reasonable cost for companies and individuals, which she has co-founded with her husband Mark Evans (Chairman), Mayet has pushed to extend what she and her team started within the UAE. True to her and her husband’s vision, they have expanded their school, establishing branches in Romania and in the UK, where they also provide primary and secondary distance learning programs. With their endeavors, she hopes to help people realize their dreams by cultivating both knowledge and life skills, providing an alternative to those who cannot afford traditional schools, as well as those looking to shift careers.

Mayet’s vision and legacy are anchored on her own story of hard work and success, from setting up the first legal Filipino training center in the UAE, all the way to becoming an international brand.   Her belief that education is a gift that nobody should take away is a constant motivator for all her efforts.  She says, “It doesn’t matter if you were born poor or rich; you should work for your dream and never stop learning.”

Leo V Barrameda

Philanthropist

Beneath his humble and timid visage, Leo Barrameda proves how the power of one can make a huge difference in changing the lives of others. Manager for the International Collectors Programme at Art Dubai, this philanthropist and community volunteer has been supporting the underprivileged through his skills as an entrepreneur and by sponsoring numerous charity organizations and initiatives. In recent years, together with his friends and himself driving the scholarship project, Leo’s group has sent hundreds of B’Laan kids to school.  2018, was a continuation of this effort, Leo has sent 100 kids to elementary school, supported ten high school students, and 50 enrollees of the Department of Education’s Alternative Learning System. Brusko Barbers takes a different approach in business from the usual barbershop of old, providing some of the country’s best male-grooming services to a multicultural customer base in the UAE, which includes personalities, artists, and influencers in the country.

A hip and chilled out hub for the modern-day man, Brusko Barbers’ quirky aesthetics combined with a modern barbershop experience has garnered respect in the sector and even earned the brand the “Best in Grooming” honors at the Men’s Health & Women’s Health Middle East awards.

Founded by Roy Cruz, Abi Gaddi Cruz, Algene Suria, and Malu Gallardo, who’ve been in the industry for more than a decade, Brusko’s mission is to connect and take care of their clients, providing high-quality grooming services to generate loyalty in the long run. The brand wants to be known as an enterprise that exudes the courage to excel in whatever they put their mind into and to prove that innovation indeed can make a mark, even in a business that’s seemingly as mundane as grooming.

Brusko Barbers

Making a difference in their own terms is this Dubai-grown Filipino founded brand that has set a new standard in the male grooming sector in the country.  The story of Brusko Barbers just goes to show that even a simple business, if done with pride and creativity can cut through the clutter.

Not the barbershop of old, Brusko Barbers, the brainchild of co-founders Roy Cruz, Abi Gaddi Cruz, Algene Suria, and Malu Gallardo has climbed from being your typical haircut place to a hotspot among the hip and happening gents of Dubai. With a quirky brand identity, Brusko’s founders have pushed the grooming envelope, delivering their authentic take on the modern barbershop experience from the services, to the nostalgic atmosphere, down to the camaraderie offered by its affable staff. Brusko Barbers has gained patronage among some rising personalities, including artists and influencers, and have also garnered industry recognition landing in finalist position in the category of ‘Best in Grooming’ at the recent #mhwhawards18 by Men’s Health & Women’s Health Middle East.

A specialty brand that serves a growing international clientele built on 100% Filipino entrepreneurship is somewhat of a rarity in Dubai.  Undaunted, they share, “Building a brick and mortar shop targeting to serve multinational clientele by 100 percent Filipino first-time entrepreneurs in the service industry was not an easy feat, but it is a challenge we accepted headstrong. By staying optimistic, putting in the hard work, and relying on each other’s expertise, we overcame these challenges.  Armed with grit, professionalism and creative innovation, now we’ve built a place that has become worthy of very happy and proud customers.”

Entrepreneur Maria Josephine Abina is one of the strongest proponents of Filipino business in Oman.  She has given opportunities to many entrepreneurial kababayans, and also used her vast network to connect people, and foster stronger ties between the Philippines and the Sultanate.

Founder of Fashion House Oman, and partner for the first international center of Vantage International – a Kamiseta Company from the Philippines, Josephine has seen her business reach a new peak recently, gaining over 1000 registered members and resellers under HBT Business Center Muscat.  They currently have five Omani affiliated partners acting as a marketing arm; and three Philippine partner brands – namely Vantage International (Kamiseta Company), Mama Sita’s and Natasha Philippines.

Beyond her many initiatives to help the business and Filipino community, in early 2019, Josephine was also appointed as Ambassador for the Muscat InterNations, the largest global platform for expats. Here, she has organized 12 events and hosted more than 100 activities in the last two years, bringing people together under various regional networking groups.

She is also looking forward to the launch of her first book “The Gospel of Business Networking,” in April 2020.  She shares, “I want Filipino expats to understand that we have serious business to do in this world. Each time we use the resources available around us, we support other people’s businesses. So, let’s be serious because we have accountability here. No matter what, we need to think big and contribute our share.”

Marlon Malinao is committed to two very distinct disciplines that exemplify the infinite talent and creativity of Filipinos.   The Senior Editor of Kuwait’s leading English daily, he devotes his free time perfecting his skills in the field of make-up, while also utilizing his gifts to support those in need.  He shares, “As a journalist, I am proud to share my credibility and work ethics.  On the other hand, I use my craft as a platform to highlight the Filipinos’ ingenuity and concern for others.”

Capping his growth in the make-up sector, Marlon has been recently tapped by world-renowned British make-up artist and label owner Charlotte Tilbury for a collaboration that will be featured in their regional and global campaigns.  “This is definitely a dream come true,” Marlon shares.

The flip side of this is being able to further his advocacy for supporting cancer patients and the less fortunate by giving proceeds of his make-up projects to community initiatives.  Marlon has also teamed up with Childhope Asia and Project 30 to facilitate the donation of school bags and hygiene kits to disadvantaged students in Manila.  To provide a potential source of livelihood in the Philippines, Marlon has also started teaching makeup application to distressed Filipino workers.  “I want to leave a legacy of empathy, charity, and inspiration. I want to be known as an ‘encourager’ to do good and break the glass ceiling. The world has plenty of critics and disparagers already.”

Marlon Aquino Malinao - Most Influential Filipinos in the Gulf 2019

Senior Editor of Kuwait’s leading English daily Arab Times, Marlon Aquino Malinao has become a conduit for Filipino excellence. Beginning his career as a sub-editor in 2005, he rose to Business Editor in no time and was eventually promoted to the third highest post in office. In a field where Filipino representation in leadership positions is rare, especially in the media, Marlon is a testament that Filipinos are indeed world-class and can make a difference in the workplace.

Aside from being a respected journalist, Marlon’s passion for creative expression has led him to the vibrant field of makeup. “For me, make-up is a stress-relieving form of art; a haven from the challenging routine of a newsperson.” Through make-up, he has collaborated with many talented individuals and celebrities, for television commercials and editorials, not to mention projects for a cause. His artistic prowess was showcased abroad when he directed Resty Lagare’s fashion show in the USA, and when he worked on Miss Austin Texas 2018, as well as Miss Austin Texas Teen 2018.  Just recently, Marlon also launched his make-up line called ‘MARvelous’ which he hopes to be a global household name someday.

With his unique career path, pursuing two entirely different disciplines, Marlon shows that indeed, one can have a flourishing career while pursuing another passion.  He underlines the importance of balancing his pursuits properly, but even more of having a good attitude in life.

“Let other people’s success or happiness, be your success or source of joy and inspiration. With that attitude, this world will be a better place.”

The former Chairman of the Philippine Business Council in Abu Dhabi and a very dynamic member of the Executive Committee for years, Jan Barlow has shared her skills, leadership and has worked and spearheaded many projects that proved beneficial to the local community.

A tireless community volunteer and consummate professional, Jan has helped many Filipinos in the business community in establishing relationships with the Philippines’ commercial and trade representatives and vice – versa, sharing business opportunities and technical know-how with peers and aiding in their journey towards self-employment. In 2018, she also spearheaded the council’s first VAT seminar in the capital, involving ten international business groups in one roof with over a hundred attendees. The Philippine Business Council – Abu Dhabi received great recognition because of this event.

A technical writing expert leading Pacific Consulting’s team of specialists, Jan emphasizes the importance of elevating skills to advance the Philippines’ global competitiveness. She remarks, “As a country, we have a lot to contribute. Simply smiling and being able to sing and dance do not guarantee a living,” she says. “For that, we need to become more capable, particularly in terms of getting the job done and guaranteeing results. If we can do that, others will continue to recognize the Philippines as a talented, professional nation.”  She adds, “My hope for the Philippines and its people is that our nation may assume its rightful place among the countries of the world, respected and admired for our capabilities, humanity, and achievement.”

Janet Barlow

 Entrepreneur

Jan Barlow - Most influential Filipinos in the Gulf 2018

“Be professional; learn how to do something and then deliver whatever that is every day, to the same standard.”

Such is the life motto of Janet Barlow, technical writer and co-owner of Pacific Consulting Services (along with her husband, Peter). Together with their multicultural and multi-talented team, they have handled accounts and projects for major government and non-governmental agencies, namely: Masdar, ENEC, Presidential Flight and ADNOC – a rare feat among the already few Filipino professionals within the field.

Janet is also a guiding hand in the community who lives to serve. She was an active part of the Philippine Business Council in Abu Dhabi since 2008 and served as Chairman of the Council from 2016 to 2017. Before that, she was also a volunteer catechist for eight years, at St Joseph’s Cathedral in the capital.

From her humble beginnings as a factory worker to being a significant contributor to the capital’s development, Janet’s talents are a product of extensive experience and the nurturing environment she has been exposed to. “Most of what you need to know in life does not come from college or books, but experience and the environment. I have been lucky that all our professional engagements give us the opportunity to learn more.”  She has this to say about the community, “We have a lot to contribute, but simply smiling and being able to sing and dance do not guarantee a living. For that, we need to become more capable, particularly in terms of getting the job done and guaranteeing results. If we can do that, others will continue to recognize the Philippines as a talented, professional nation.”

One of these days, distinctly Filipino cocktails will be part of mainstream beverage favorites in the region, and we won’t be surprised that it will be due to the efforts of Albert Opena. Award-winning mixologist and entrepreneur Alberto believes that when you dream, you have to make it big. A name that rings a bell for many in the region’s food and beverage industry, Albert is the man behind Ounce, a leading facilities management service provider for bars, clubs, and restaurants.

Combining mixology and entrepreneurship, Albert has inspired Filipinos to step up and raise the bar in showcasing our talent for the world to see. This year, he has introduced a unique Filipino product ‘Tagai Cocktails,’ a collection of Filipino-inspired drinks. Its launch was welcomed not only by Filipinos in the region; it even captured the attention of esteemed culinary organizations such as Emirates Culinary Guild and Filfood UAE. Albert’s aim is to make every client not only remember his satisfying signature presentations but to look forward to what the Filipino market has to offer.

“Share your knowledge and experience to a greater audience,” Alberto says. “Encourage others to invest in themselves, work hard and stay focused. Only then would you know that you have been truly successful – it is when people begin to listen and learn from you.”

Alberto Opena – Ounce Oz

Mixologist and Entrepreneur

Alberto Opena - Most Influential Filipinos in the Gulf 2018

There are many ways of honoring Filipino culture.  Promoting our own through traditional flavors and aromas through beverages, is Alberto Opena’s way of celebrating and introducing the Philippines.

An award-winning mixologist and bartender turned entrepreneur, Alberto’s passion lies in innovation through food and entertainment.  Being able to promote the Philippines, through his take on drinks, utilizing familiar ingredients, as well as techniques, whether by design or for his pure enjoyment, is a definite plus and almost always becomes a high point of interest for people who experience his brand of bartending.

Armed with a decade of extensive experience within the field of bar, club and restaurant management, Alberto has worked across the world with some of the best five-star brands – from a luxury cruiser in Miami to hotel franchises in the Philippines and UAE. His venture Ounce Facilities Management LLC provides bar and lounge services for private, public and corporate events, as well as trade marketing solutions for many renowned brands such as Jack Daniels, Skyy, Russian Standard and more.

Always driven to succeed, Alberto attributes his achievements to his motto: learn, work, share, repeat.   He shares, “The passion that I have in my craft always brings out my creativity and inspires me to keep innovating.  What probably sets me apart from most people is that I don’t measure success in material things.  Rather, it is my client’s success, my family’s support in my craft, and other people who emulate me, that makes up my success.”
