I have read both books referred in the article and there is a huge difference between cultures – Europe vs Asia (Keenan); as well as present day Diplomatic families (Hickman). Spouses are not always needed or will make a big impact – some diplomats choose not to have families present at post; and some do not even have spouses. Some will choose to work and pursue their own career while at post; and because of cost of living overseas, some will need to work.

I agree with the statements of the spouses, and that is a really difficult choice to make – to support the diplomatic husband throughout a career and to all postings.

However now, there are many other options open and realities to diplomatic families. I hope the article is expanded to include these differences as well.
